Direct Support Professionals work directly with individuals with I/DD in residential settings, day programs and in the community to assist them in living their best life in a safe environment. DSP carry out an individual’s prescribed plan of care and is an integral member of the care team. As such, DSP
Help the person overcome barriers and challenges.
Assists individuals with establishing and maintaining a network of relationships.
Protect the health, safety, and well-being of each person to the fullest extent possible.
Teaches skills in adaptive behavior, activities of daily living, development of social skills and fosters greater independence and self-direction.
Job tasks include:
Carries out all interventions, procedures, and notifications in accordance with the individuals service plan, agency protocols and OPWDD regulations.
Assist with the individual’s personal hygiene needs, including toileting, bathing, food preparation and feeding.
Assist in all aspects of the individual’s developmental needs including behavior management, communication, socialization, recreation, medical care, and socialization.
Ensure the cleanliness of the residence and programs areas used throughout their assigned shift.
Encourage positive interaction between residents, staff, and neighbors.
Advocate for clients to gain support for changing or unmet needs.
Handle emergencies as they occur and make proper notifications to supervisors and appropriate administrator.
Review and document an individual’s daily activities and progress towards the individual’s service goals.
Maintain all OPWDD and agency required training and certifications.
Professional requirements:
High School Diploma or GED
Basic computer skills, excellent communication skills
A team player – within a circle of support
